Quilt Fabric Measurement Guide
Use these references to choose realistic inputs before calculating backing, binding or borders. Actual bolts, patterns and quilter requirements take priority.
Width of fabric
Width of fabric (WOF) usually means the usable crosswise width after removing or avoiding the selvages. A bolt labeled 44 inches may provide roughly 40–42 usable inches, so measure your fabric when precision matters.

Planning allowance checklist
- Confirm the backing overage requested by your longarm quilter.
- Allow for prewashing, shrinkage and squaring if those apply to your project.
- Check whether directional or large-scale prints need matching.
- Measure usable width after selvages, not only the bolt label.
- Round purchases upward and consider a small project-specific safety allowance.
